Bio? Logical!

‘Bio’ seemed to be a buzzword for a while. But even in the world of tapes, it is no longer a trend. That is why we would like to highlight a number of organic products that have been developed to meet the growing demand for environmentally-friendly solutions.

‘And nature offers much more than we think is possible. Just look at Iguna Bio Surface Cleaner. A powerful degreaser with maize as its main ingredient!’. Alexander Evenhuis, director of Tapir Tapes is convinced of the effectiveness of this natural solution.

In the field of tapes, manufacturer Tesa has developed the 4713 Packaging Tape FSC. It is a general-purpose packaging tape made with paper from sustainable sources. The coating process is solvent-free, and the entire product can be disposed of, together with its cardboard packaging, as waste paper for recycling.

Monta Biopack 860

Producer Monta has developed Biopack 860, a biodegradable adhesive tape based on PLA. PLA is a biodegradable plastic used, for instance, for food packaging. It can be torn by hand and is easy to unroll and apply.

‘Environmentally-friendly tapes. It is not a question of whether we are going to go down this road. This is what we have to do and this is what we are going to do! And more product lines are bound to follow. But, in all honesty; not all tapes, and particularly industrial tapes, are replaceable’, says Alexander.

Collega Onno Compeer adds: ‘So far our experience is that the bio-tapes are less suitable for heavy-duty applications. When things are bumping and sliding, the connection is a bit more sensitive. After all, tapes are chemical products. They have been tested endlessly and intensively to create a long-lasting and strong bond between two surfaces. And natural rubber has a limited lifespan due to its sensitivity to UV light and ozone’.

Bio-friendly world

‘However, that does not alter the fact that biodegradable packaging tape is a fantastic step towards a more bio-friendly world. Just think how many metres of tape you receive monthly as a consumer, just with home delivered parcels!’

Alexander concludes: ‘It is a slightly pricier product. Being environmentally-friendly comes at a price. But we are convinced that with the will to do better, the increasing demand will create an increasing supply. That is how the market works. The fact that prices will ultimately go down as a result, is a consequence that will be beneficial to both us and the environment.’
