Duct tape
What is duct tape?
Duct tape is a strong, fabric-reinforced single-sided tape with a rubber adhesive layer. Known for its versatility and adhesion on rough surfaces, it is widely used for temporary repairs, bundling, sealing and protection in construction, events and DIY environments. Read more
Materials & adhesive types
- Backing: PE-coated cloth or fabric (e.g. Tapir RK720/721 and 3M 389)
- Adhesives: Mostly synthetic rubber, sometimes hotmelt or acrylic
Temperature and UV resistance
- Standard duct tapes (like 3M 2903, RK720) are not heat resistant (<60 °C)
- 3M 8979 Performance Plus withstands up to 93 °C and 12 months UV
- UV resistance varies and is not common for regular duct tape
Protection & use cases
- Covering cables, pipes, ducts
- Quick emergency repairs (e.g. tent, car, carpet)
- Marking, bundling, sealing
- Indoor applications in dry environments

Is duct tape heat-resistant?
Not really. Standard duct tapes are made for max. ~60 °C. Above that, adhesives may soften or lose grip. Only 3M 8979 Performance Plus handles up to 93 °C for temporary use.
Alternatives for high-temperature applications
- 3M 501E masking tape – up to 140 °C
- Tesa 50600 polyester tape – up to 220 °C
- 3M 232 masking tape – spray booth use
Removing Duct Tape Adhesive
You can often remove stubborn adhesive residue with a soft cloth and a solvent such as Iguna Strong Surface Cleaner Wipes or 3M Industrial Cleaner. Always test on an inconspicuous area. A possible step-by-step plan:
- Slowly peel off the tape
- Use a hairdryer on a low setting to soften any adhesive
- Apply Iguna Strong Surface Cleaner Wipes to the adhesive residue
- Wipe clean with a non-abrasive cloth
It is practical to use because it is very strong lengthways, yet easy to tear widthways. In an episode of the television program MythBusters, they demonstrated that it is possible to make a duct tape bridge of about 30 metres in length, able to support at least one person.
Is it duck tape or duct tape or is it Cloth tape?
The one story originated because it bore tubes to each other or taped off the other story comes from that the water drips off like the feathers of a duck (duck) and what it is in the base in any case, is an adhesive layer with a carrier constructed from linen fabric so as to achieve a high tear.
But the way in which these wires are incorporated in the backing also makes it possible to tear off the tape by hand.
Whatever the correct origin of the name, duct tape is indispensable in every household and a very useful aid for various (emergency) repairs
Versatile
Nothing as versatile as the duct tape. You can use this tape virtually anywhere. You can stick packaging with it securely, you can protect it, seal it, make repairs, mount something or make it waterproof. Duct tape adheres to different surfaces: on stone, concrete, wood, metal, plastic and so on. It leaves easily, without leaving sticky residue or adhesive residue.
It is usually very strong in the longitudinal direction, while it can easily tear off in the width direction. No handyman or "do-it-yourselfer" can do without duct tape. Order your favorite duct tapes at Tapir Tapes now and make sure you have enough stock. You do not have to sit without the cheap price.
Is Duct, Duck or Cloth tape the same as "Gaffa" tape?
Not quite, in general the structure is the same, it is also tearable by hand very strong etc, the difference is in the coating that is used, Gaffe tape comes from the word "Gaffer" someone who is in the theater, on the stage or studio is responsible for light and sound / electricity is also often called the gaffer.
Nichiban is a very strong and well-known brand in the Gaffa tape. For this tape they have used a coating that is not mirrored and that is of course a very welcome invention at these locations.
In addition, these tapes have a layer of glue that is clean-removable, if you use a duck tape then chances are that the adhesive layer remains behind on the cables and that is not desirable in that world.
The RK 720 has the same coating as is used on the Gaffa tape.
