What is the difference between linen tape, textile tape or duct tape?

Actually there is no difference, there are stories that duct tape is water-repellent and linen tape is not. But that is not correct. A duct tape is just like a linen or textile tape, a tape with a fibre-reinforced carrier, just like a linen and textile tape is.

The biggest differences are in the type of fiber used, the adhesive layer and the type of coating used or not.

The names have been used interchangeably over the years and that is why we call it all tape with a fiber-reinforced carrier.

Is linen tape the same as "Gaffa" tape?

Not quite, the construction is broadly the same, it is also tearable by hand, very strong etc, the difference is in the coating that is used, Gaffe tape comes from the word "Gaffer" someone who works in the theater, on the stage or studio is responsible for the light and sound/electricity is often called the gaffer.

Nichiban is a very strong and well-known brand in the Gaffa tape. They have used a coating for this tape that is not mirrored and that has of course been a very welcome invention at these locations.

In addition, these tapes have an adhesive layer that can be removed cleanly. If you use a duckt or linen tape at random, there is a good chance that the adhesive layer will remain on the cables and that is not desirable in that world. An exception to this is the 3M 8979 Performance Plus Duct tape, which can be removed cleanly up to 6 months after application on most surfaces. We always recommend that you do an extensive test first!
