What is packaging tape?
Packaging tape is a single-sided adhesive tape specifically developed for reliably sealing cartons and packaging. Depending on the application, different combinations of backings (such as PP, PVC, polyester or paper) and adhesive systems (rubber or acrylic) are available.
The right combination determines performance in terms of adhesion, processability and durability, especially when used on recycled cardboard or under varying conditions.
Applications of packaging tape
Packaging tapes are commonly used for:
- Sealing cartons (manual or machine application)
- Bundling products and packaging
- Securing pallets and transport packaging
- Closing bags and film packaging

Properties and materials
Common backing materials:
- PP (polypropylene): cost-effective, versatile and suitable for standard applications
- PVC: flexible, low-noise unwinding and strong, suitable for heavier packaging
- Paper: sustainable alternative, often hand-tearable
- Polyester / filament reinforced: for heavy-duty applications and high tensile strength
Adhesive systems:
- Acrylic: good ageing resistance and suitable for long-term storage
- Rubber (hot melt or solvent): high initial tack, ideal for fast processing and difficult substrates
Technical considerations
- Substrate: recycled cardboard often requires higher adhesion
- Temperature: low temperatures can affect acrylic adhesive performance
- Application method: manual or automated (dispensers / case sealers)
- Package weight: heavier cartons require thicker or reinforced tapes
- Storage and transport: long-term storage requires ageing-resistant tapes
Which packaging tape do I need?
- For standard cartons → PP packaging tape (28–35 micron)
- For recycled cardboard → high tack tape (rubber adhesive)
