What is duct tape?

Duct tape is a self-adhesive tape with a cloth (fabric) backing and a water-resistant coating. This construction makes the tape very strong in the lengthwise direction, while still allowing it to be torn by hand across the width.

The combination of a strong adhesive layer and flexible cloth backing makes duct tape suitable for a wide range of applications, such as temporary repairs, sealing and general mounting.

What is the difference between duct tape, duck tape and cloth tape?

There are different explanations for the name “duct tape”. One refers to its historical use for sealing air ducts, while another refers to its water-repellent properties (duck).

Technically, these terms generally describe tapes with a woven cloth backing, which provides high tear strength and flexibility. The way the fabric fibres are processed in the backing influences both durability and ease of use.

Versatile applications

Duct and cloth tapes are widely used for:

  • Repairs and temporary fixing

  • Sealing and protecting

  • Bundling and securing

  • Mounting on a wide range of surfaces

These tapes adhere well to materials such as wood, metal, plastics, concrete and stone. Depending on the adhesive system and product type, some variants are intended for short-term use, while others are suitable for longer-term applications.

What is the difference between duct tape and gaffer tape?

Although the construction can be similar, gaffer tape was developed specifically for professional use in theatre, events, studios and AV installations.

The key differences are in the surface layer and adhesive:

  • Gaffer tape has a non-reflective (matte) finish

  • The adhesive is typically clean removable, leaving minimal residue

  • This makes it ideal for cables, stages and temporary installations

Duct tape is generally stronger and more rugged, but it is not always clean removable. For that reason, choosing the right tape for the job — and testing when needed — is always recommended.
