Water-resistant tapes
Water-resistant tapes are designed with an adhesive layer that withstands moisture and water exposure without breaking down. These tapes are commonly used in applications where resistance to weather, humidity or outdoor conditions is required. Many VHB and acrylic foam tapes, as well as PVC and duct tapes, offer a high level of water resistance and are suitable for both indoor and outdoor use. What should you consider when using water-resistant tapes?
The performance of water-resistant tape depends on several factors:
- Substrate - always clean, dry and flat. In case of contamination or moisture, the surface should be prepared according to application guidelines
- Testing beforehand - every substrate and bonding situation is different, so testing is essential
- External influences - consider UV exposure, temperature fluctuations, solvents and chemicals
Applications and variants
Water-resistant duct tape
Duct tape (also known as cloth or gaffer tape) is strong, versatile and adheres to almost any dry, clean surface. Thanks to its reinforced structure, it is ideal for sealing pipes, closing films or securing cables.
Note: for leaking pipes or heavy-duty applications, duct tape is usually only a temporary solution.
Extreme sealing tape
A high-performance solution that bonds directly to metals and many plastics:
- No drying time or post-processing required
- Durable and resistant to UV and chemicals
- Paintable and suitable for outdoor use
- Ideal for sealing joints, seams and holes with a professional finish
VHB acrylic foam tapes
VHB acrylic foam tapes offer a degree of water resistance when applied correctly. They are suitable for structural bonding and long-term applications, even when exposed to weather conditions.
UV resistance and environmental exposure
Even the strongest waterproof tape may fail over time if the adhesive is not sufficiently resistant to UV radiation or high temperatures. For outdoor applications, selecting the correct tape type is essential. If in doubt, contact us for expert advice.
Waterproof does not mean vapour-tight
A bond can be water-resistant without being vapour- or gas-tight. For example, an aquarium may be watertight but can still allow slow vapour transmission.
For glass applications, we recommend using a primer such as 3M Silane Glass Primer AP115. This improves adhesion and durability on glass, plastics and metal glazing profiles, making it ideal for applications such as shop windows, bathrooms and kitchens.
Frequently asked questions
How long does water-resistant tape last?
This depends on the substrate, load and environment. When applied correctly, high-quality tapes can last for years.
Can I use water-resistant tape for leaks?
For small, temporary repairs this is possible, but for permanent solutions we recommend a more durable or customised solution.
What is the difference between water-resistant and waterproof?
Water-resistant means the tape withstands moisture and splashes. Waterproof means it can withstand prolonged water exposure, even under pressure.
Is duct tape suitable for outdoor use?
Yes, but typically only as a temporary solution. For long-term outdoor use, we recommend specialised tapes such as VHB or extreme sealing tapes.
How do I prepare the surface?
Ensure the surface is clean, dry and grease-free. Use primers or cleaners where necessary to improve adhesion.
